Ashley Barton

Assistant Brand Manager

I’m currently on a secondment role for Carlton Dry. It’s great to be able to work on Carlton Dry because I’m 26 turning 27 and it’s a key youth brand for CUB. I really enjoy being able to do exciting work like television commercials, on-pack promotions, experiential activities and collaborating on music sponsorships. I’ve got a big passion for music so being able to get involved in this space is a real perk of the job.

When you’re out and about and chatting with your mates, I find it’s quite easy to talk about beer and you can find that a lot of other people find it quite easy to talk about it too. Beer is interesting… who would have thought?

It’s something that people are very passionate about and when they hear you work for a brewery it’s something they get real excited about. That type of reaction makes me proud to work at CUB! I’ve worked in past organisations where it’s been managing products such as jellies and toppings which, let’s face it, is dead boring, but I find that working on beer evokes quite a bit of passion with your consumers and being able to go out and see TV ads or print ads that you and your friends can actually look at is something I find quite exciting.

One of the key things I enjoy as part of my job is going out to the brewery and speaking to the brewers, in particular when you are developing a new product. When you go out to brief in a new brew, you get to speak directly to the brewers themselves and talk in detail about the flavour you are trying to achieve. From there, the brewers develop concept brews and you get to actually taste them. I really have enjoyed building an understanding how different ingredients can affect the overall flavour profile of a beer. This is something that I am keenly interested in and one of the many different experiences I enjoy within my role.

It’s a great environment to work in when you’re at CUB. Everybody obviously works hard but we also celebrate each other’s success. It’s a very encouraging environment to work in. I find it valuable that you can actually speak to different people who have different depths of experience. You can ask a Marketing Manager what’s their opinion on a piece of creative or even speak to another person that might just be a different age group than you and get their opinion on a specific piece of work.

Plans for the future would be that I’d like to stay at CUB and become a Marketing Manager within the next few years. CUB is an awesome organisation that enables me to achieve my career goals which is ensured through performance reviews and setting out what you need to achieve to get to the next level. I really like their attitude of putting people first and ensuring that you can achieve your career goals while also achieving the organisational goals.
